 1000 Years of Popular Music

1000 Years of Popular Music

As the year 2000 loomed on the horizon, Playboy Magazine took it upon itself to ask a number of leading musicians to name the greatest songs of the soon-to-be-completed millennium. One of the musos queried was Richard Thompson, and while many of his comrades couldn’t be bothered to go further back than 1940 in their overview of musical history, the scholarly Thompson took the notion seriously enough to extend his own list of notable songs as far back as 1068 A.D. While Playboy never ended up printing Thompson’s list, the notion made enough of an impression on him that he put together a special show in which he guided his audience through his own version of the greatest hits of the past ten centuries. 1000 Years of Popular Music is culled from recordings of Thompson’s concert series of the same name, and beyond the novelty value of the set list (from the oldest round in the English language to Britney Spears in a mere 76 minutes!), it also offers a rare look at Thompson the interpretive musician, as well as lends a fascinating perspective on his musical influences. As one might expect, the early innings are dominated by the British folk tradition, with “King Henry V’s Conquest of France” and “Blackleg Miner” suggesting where Thompson’s melodic sense first took root, and other tunes demonstrating how operetta and the British music halls absorbed and refined similar themes. Thompson also indulges his passion for classic jazz of the 1930s and ’40s on some Nat King Cole and Louis Armstrong chestnuts, and wraps up by following rock & roll through Jerry Lee Lewis, the Who, and the Beatles to Prince and Britney Spears (“Oops! I Did It Again,” of which Thompson writes, “Taken out of context, this is a pretty nice song”). Considering that precious few of these songs were meant to be performed by a solo acoustic guitar, Thompson’s arrangements are inventive and effective; whether he’s going for laughs or drama, he gets the most from his material. (He’s also fortunat…

The evolution from blues to rock accelerated with the Rolling Stones’ second American LP. They turned soul into guitar rock for the hits “It’s All Over Now” and “Time Is on My Side” (the latter of which was their first American Top Ten single). “2120 South Michigan Avenue” is a great instrumental blues-rock jam; “Around and Around” is one of their best Chuck Berry covers; and “If You Need Me” reflects an increasing contemporary soul influence. On the other hand, the group originals (except for the propulsive “Empty Heart”) are weak and derivative, indicating that the band still had a way to go before it could truly challenge the Beatles’ throne. ~ Richie Unterberger, Rovi

 1990 [Bonus Tracks]

1990 [Bonus Tracks]

Daniel Johnston’s only Shimmy Disc release provides a nice showcase of the kind of spare and blunt material he excels at and contains plenty of his own brand of preaching. With his minimal guitar/piano accompaniment and childlike vocals, Johnston sounds at once bleak and innocent on nouveau church hymns like “Held the Hand” and “Lord Give Me Hope.” He switches gears for some fire and brimstone, though, on the impassioned and painfully comic “Don’t Play Cards With Satan” (one of three live numbers recorded at CBGB’s). Johnston gets some help from Sonic Youth’s Steve Shelley and Lee Ranaldo on the rousing, minor-key number “Spirit World Rising” and teams up with Jad Fair for the touching lament “Some Things Last a Long Time.” The mood lightens a bit with a cover of the Beatles’ “Got to Get You Into My Life,” but with Johnston’s gothic and chunky piano chords threatening to derail the song, the respite is brief. Johnston’s battle with manic depression is well known and is made painfully explicit here when successive live cuts find him in tears at one moment (“Careless Love”) and leading a singalong in the next (“Funeral Home”). In spite of the rough going, this Daniel Johnston release is still worth getting; It’s certainly a must for his fans and not a bad purchase for the newcomer either. [The 2008 remastered reissue adds five bonus demos, including a piano-led version of "Tears Stupid Tears".] ~ Stephen Cook, Rovi

Toto’s career has been a rather strange one. Several top-flight Los Angeles session musicians — many of whom performed on Boz Scaggs’ classic 1976 album Silk Degrees — formed Toto and achieved instant success with their 1978 self-titled debut album. Commercial success was fairly consistent, but many critics never liked Toto and the band’s pariah status was forever sealed when 1982’s Toto IV won the Grammy award for Album of the Year. Toto found their selling power in the U. S. fade in the ’90s while their star status in Europe and Asia shot upward; their mainstream U.S. pop/rock style probably sounded exotic to overseas audiences. Despite several personnel changes, the band never gave up. They celebrated their 25th anniversary with a concert at the Heineken Music Hall in Amsterdam, Netherlands, on February 17, 2003. This show was filmed for the enjoyable DVD 25th Anniversary: Live in Amsterdam (a CD version is also available). Vocalist/guitarist Steve Lukather, vocalist/keyboardist David Paich, vocalist Bobby Kimball, bass guitarist Mike Porcaro, and drummer Simon Phillips (along with supplemental guitarist/background vocalist Tony Spinner and keyboardist/background vocalist John Jessel) were on tour promoting 2002’s covers album Through the Looking Glass when they made this recording, and the DVD finds Toto performing giant hits such as “Africa,” “I Won’t Hold You Back,” “Rosanna,” and “Hold the Line” along with plenty of intriguing album tracks. “Girl Goodbye,” “Goodbye Elenore,” “Child’s Anthem,” and “I’ll Supply the Love” open the show in the form of a lengthy medley. “Gift with a Golden Gun” is one of the in-concert rarities. Through the Looking Glass is represented by the Beatles’ “While My Guitar Gently Weeps,” Steely Dan’s “Bodhisattva,” and the Temptations’ “I Can’t Get Next to You.” (It’s interesting to note that while many Toto members had performed on Steely Dan recordings, “Bodhisattva” and its parent Countdown to Ecstasy …

 40th Anniversary Collection

40th Anniversary Collection

$22.98

This reviewer is usually loathe to give compilation albums the highest rating, as they have an unfair advantage over original albums; and it’s not as though there aren’t already good multi-CD sets on the Searchers, including their 30th Anniversary Collection from Sequel Records. But this two-disc, 56-song collection goes into territory where the early triple-disc set never ventured as the first Searchers compilation to encompass not only their most familiar work on Pye Records, but also Phonogram, RCA, Sire, PRT, and Coconut Records. It also avails itself of the vast expansion of the band’s tape library in recent decades, including demos and live tracks, all in state-of-the-art sound. The result is not only the first truly comprehensive overview of this group, which never had a bad or a dull period, but also their best-sounding account in terms of the sharpness of the remastering. What may surprise even longtime fans is how well their 1963 vintage demos and live tracks come off as performances. Based on the evidence here, these guys were ready to record that far back and had some edges that were a lot rougher and sometimes sharper than the polished, rhythm guitar focused sound that they later cultivated in the studio. In a sense, listening to this collection from front to back is a lot like going through the Beatles’ history, except that the Searchers never took a left turn into psychedelia or, with the exceptions of Tony Jackson and Chris Curtis, developed egos that threatened the integrity of the group. The 2003 remastering has also given their stuff a startling immediacy of impact that outstrips their best prior CDs. You can actually hear the action on the guitars and the drums on this collection, especially on “Sweets for My Sweet” and “Ain’t Gonna Kiss Ya,” the two earliest official releases. The rhythm guitars on “Needles and Pins” and “When You Walk in the Room” chime loud and melodiously in the best mastering job they’ve ever received, and, for th…

 801 Live

801 Live

$11.99

801 provided Roxy Music guitarist Phil Manzanera with one of his most intriguing side projects. Although the band only played three gigs in August and September 1976, this album captures a night when everything fell right into place musically. That should only be expected with names like Eno and Simon Phillips in the lineup. (Still, the lesser-known players — bassist Bill MacCormick, keyboardist Francis Monkman, and slide guitarist Lloyd Watson — are in exemplary form, too.) The repertoire is boldly diverse, opening with “Lagrima,” a crunchy solo guitar piece from Manzanera. Then the band undertakes a spacey but smoldering version of “Tomorrow Never Knows”; it’s definitely among the cleverest of Beatles covers. Then it’s on to crisp jazz-rock (“East of Asteroid”), atmospheric psych-pop (“Rongwrong”), and Eno’s tape manipulation showcase, “Sombre Reptiles.” And that’s only the first five songs. The rest of the gig is no less audacious, with no less than three Eno songs — including a frenetic “Baby’s on Fire,” “Third Uncle,” and “Miss Shapiro”’s dense, syllable-packed verbal gymnastics. There’s another unlikely cover of the Kinks’ “You Really Got Me,” while Manzanera turns in another typically gutsy instrumental performance on “Diamond Head.” This album marks probably one of the last times that Eno rocked out in such an unself-consciously fun fashion, but that’s not the only reason to buy it: 801 Live is a cohesive document of an unlikely crew who had fun and took chances. Listeners will never know what else they might have done if their schedules had been less crowded, but this album’s a good reminder. ~ Ralph Heibutzki, Rovi

 A Can of Bees

A Can of Bees

$14.98

The Soft Boys, like so many other underground miscreants in the ’70s, spent their formative years (unbeknownst to them) generating enough critical capital to earn much sought-after biographical adjectives like ? influential? and ? underrated.? The Robyn Hitchcock-led, Cambridge, England-born, pseudo-psych rock outfit’s shared love for all things Byrds, Beatles, Dylan, and Syd Barrett was both venerated and blown to smithereens on their 1979 debut long-player, A Can of Bees. More angular and jarring than the band? s beloved 1980 follow-up, Underwater Moonlight, Hitchcock, Kimberly Rew, Morris Windsor, and Andy Metcalfe sounded positively possessed, channeling both ’60s progressive rock and late-’70s punk into an unholy guitar-driven onslaught fueled by Hitchcock’s surreal lyrics: opening a record with a line like ? feel like asking a tree for an autograph? is one thing, but backing up those words with an atonal, apocalyptic blues riff is another. It? s an often brutish affair that works more often than it should, with highlights arriving by way of the pounding and addictive ? Leppo and the Jooves,? the incendiary ? Do the Chisel,? and the impossibly dumb but nearly perfect pop gem ? Sandra? s Having Her Brain Out.? A Can of Bees has seen its fair share of iterations over the years, often boasting multiple bonus cuts and conflicting track listings (the impossibly prolific Hitchcock would eventually become notorious for this with his solo releases), but they? re all more or less complete, and the material continues to inspire, even if it? s only a handful of ears at a time. ~ James Christopher Monger, Rovi

 A Hard Day's Night (Album)

A Hard Day’s Night (Album)

$76.99

High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! A Hard Day’s Night is the third studio album by The Beatles, released on 10 July 1964 as the soundtrack to their film A Hard Day’s Night. The American version of the album was released on 26 June 1964 by United Artists Records with a different track listing. It was eventually replaced by the original UK version with its first release on CD, 26 February 1987. While showcasing the development of the band’s songwriting talents, the album sticks to the basic rock and roll instrumentation and song format. The album contains some of their most famous songs, including the title track and its distinct, instantly recognizable opening chord; and “Can’t Buy Me Love”, both were transatlantic number one singles for the band. The album and film are said to portray the classic image of the Beatles, as it was released at the height of Beatlemania. According to music critic Richie Unterberger, “George Harrison’s resonant 12-string electric guitar leads were hugely influential; the movie helped persuade the Byrds, then folksingers, to plunge all out into rock & roll, and the Beatles would be hugely influential on the folk-rock explosion of 1965.

Although his success lasted only a year and a half before his death in an airplane crash , Holly is described by critic Bruce Elder as “the single most influential creative force in early rock and roll.” His works and innovations inspired and influenced both his contemporaries and later musicians, notably The Beatles , The Rolling Stones , Don McLean , and Bob Dylan , and exerted a profound influence on popular music . Holly was in the first group of inductees to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1986. In 2004, Rolling Stone ranked Holly #13 among “The Fifty Greatest Artists of All Time”. Biography Early life Charles Hardin Holley was born in Lubbock , Texas to Lawrence Odell and Ella Pauline (Drake) Holley on Labor Day , 1936. The Holleys were a musical family, and as a boy Holley learned to play piano, guitar, and violin. His singing won him a talent contest at age five. Holly was always called Buddy by his family. In 1949, he made a recording of Hank Snow’s “My Two Timin’ Woman” on a wire recorder “borrowed” by a friend who worked in a music shop, his first known recording. In 1952, he met Bob Montgomery at Hutchinson Junior High School. They shared an interest in music and teamed up as “Buddy and Bob”. Initially influenced by bluegrass music , they sang harmony duets at local clubs and high school talent shows. Hutchinson Junior High School now has a mural honoring him, and Lubbock High School also honors the late musician. Holly sang in the Lubbock High School
